Should I Major in Social Work or Psychology to Help Drug Addicts?

Question by : Should I major in Social Work or Psychology to help drug addicts?
I am a recovered addict with a desire to help other addicts.

I only plan to get a bachelor’s degree. Currently my major is officially Psychology with a Substance Abuse concentration. Last semester I decided to change to Social Work because it seemed more like what I wanted to do–just help addicts in their current situations.

It’s almost time to register for the spring semester, and I’ve got to make a real choice now. There’s no other classes I can take that will apply to both degree’s and I don’t want to waste any more time on classes that won’t go towards my degree. And I’ve already got 21 or more hours of electives.

My social work classes seem to come more natural to me but are extremely boring. I’ve only taken 1 psychology class and it’s really hard, but the section on drug abuse was sooooooo interesting. I’ve also just realized that the university I attend offers another degree that sounds similar to what I’m interested in.

My university offers three 4 year degrees that I am interested in:

B.A. Social Work
B.S. in Psychology with Substance Abuse specialization
B.S. in Addiction Studies

Any ideas as to which degree would earn the most in Louisiana? Also which degree program has the easiest course load? Not to sound lazy, but I’m a 30 year old single mom, working full time in retail. Realistically, I don’t want to pursue something that will end up being so hard that I drop out.

My long term goal is hopefully opening a sober living facility for women and their children.

Awesome. I’m getting a BA in Psychology with a minor in Social Welfare.

It’s my view that people in school are so focused on obtaining their degrees that they don’t look at the big picture. You would probably do very well opening a sober living facility with any of those degrees.

But you would probably like to acquire the title “Social Worker,” huh? Here in FL, you have to actually enter into a special program and get a special degree to get that title. But that’s FL. AL’s probably a bit different.

I suggest that you talk with counselors in both areas. Tell them your goals, be honest about your interest level in classes, etc. They’ll help guide you and tell you what you can expect.

And most of all, do NOT be afraid to put off your decision. Frankly, my Social Welfare classes are a real snore, too. They helped me really decide that I wanted to get into industrial psychology. =P

Good luck. You’re doing great. =)
