Where Can My Friend Who Has Cancer Get a Place to Live?
Question by mcross: Where can my friend who has cancer get a place to live?
My friend lives in South Mississippi and was living in a fema trailer since the hurricane. It smelled strongly of formaldehyde and she called to complain, but was dismissed. She has since been diagnosed with incurable cancer with the tumor being around her lungs, esophagus, and heart. Chemo has shrunk the tumor to nothing, but is supposed to recur. She does not want to live in the fema trailer, she can’t get another place because she has spent so much money on the surgeries, treatments, and drugs there is none left. She can’t work while taking chemo and doesn’t know when she will be forced to continue chemo treatments. So, that leaves her with her family. She has a mother who is mentally ill. She is psychotic and has many behavioral problems. I have invited my friend here, but my young children would make it difficult to provide constant care. She is not sick enough for hospice, and doesn’t qualify for rest homes, and can’t afford home health care. Where do we go from here?

Here is the answer I got back from my social worker friend. She assumed your friend lived in New Orleans, but I will copy and paste her information anyway. Hope this helps:
She is eligible for Medicare and Medicaid-she may already have it if she is on SS Disability. There really is no longer any low income housing in NOLA-none of the areas were there were low income houses are back for the most part.
In all honesty she could contact the Welfare office in NOLA and the Red Cross for contacts. So much has changed and the services have dwindled dramatically-There is also nowhere to receive mental health counseling… . She could call one of the Hospice organizations in New Orleans and see if a social worker can put her in touch with contacts… .
I would try the Hospice route first and ask for a social worker and see what is available. All of Hopices services are covered by Medicare-the caveat is you have accepted the fact that you are going to die.
you do not have to be confined to a bed to have home hospice-inpatient hospice is a little bit more confining but Hopsice often will accept anyone who is terminal and only wants pallative care. It can be hard to find a spot-but a Doctor could refer her.
