Using hand sanitizer to get drunk. According to the Los Angeles Times, six teenagers have been taken to the emergency room in the last few months after drinking hand sanitizer. While there have only been a handful of cases so far, officials are concerned that drinking hand sanitizer could become more widespread. More From Delish: Food Fads Through the Years “All it takes is just a few swallows and you have a drunk teenager,” explained Cyrus Rangan, Director of the Toxics Epidemiology Program at the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. “There is no question that it is dangerous.” Hand sanitizer has an extremely high ethyl alcohol content of 62%, the equivalent of 120-proof liquor when it’s consumed. That means that a few swigs of the stuff can cause, “a person’s speech to slur and stomach to burn.” Additionally, it can easily lead to alcohol poisoning. To drink the sanitizer, teenagers have been using distillation techniques, which they can find in a matter of seconds on the Internet. Some teens have been using another common household item, salt, to separate the alcohol from the sanitizer. The result? A drink that is the equivalent of an extremely potent shot of hard liquor.
